Getting ready for a photoshoot with your pet? It can be a little overwhelming deciding what to wear at any photoshoot, let alone a pet photoshoot, so here are a few tips:

Make Sure You're Comfortable

Your photoshoot may involve sitting, kneeling, or laying down with your pet. Choose clothing that allows you to move easily and won't restrict your movement. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially if the session is outdoors.

Match Your Outfit With The Location

Think about the location of your shoot:

  • Outdoors: Neutral or earthy tones like beige, olive, rusty tones and soft blues photograph well in nature. You can't go wrong with blue jeans and a top in cooler months, or loose shorts and a tee in warmer months.

  • Urban: Go casual-chic with jeans, a bomber jacket, and a singlet or tee.

  • Cozy Indoors: Think sweaters, jeans, or even barefoot for a relaxed vibe.

Don't Blend In With Your Pet's Fur

Select colors that allow your pet's coat to stand out, rather than blending in with them.  If multiple people are in the photos, aim for a similar color palette(they don't have to match exactly).

  • Light-colored pets: Pastel or vibrant tones like teal or coral work well.

  • Golden coated pets: Shades of cream, mustard, or navy can complement beautifully.

  • Dark-colored dogs: Lighter tones like white, cream, or soft blush enhance their features.

  • Multicolored dogs: Solid-coloured clothing helps avoid clashing with their coat.

Avoid busy patterns and logos

Your outfit should reflect you. Choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident—after all, these photos are meant to capture who you truly are. To keep the focus on your pet, however, consider opting for clean and timeless pieces. Avoid large logos, bold patterns, or neon colors that might steal the spotlight. Love bright colors or patterns? Just lean towards softer or subtler variations to balance the overall look. Check in with your photographer if you're unsure.

Plan for everything

  • Weather can change quickly! Bring a jacket, scarf and gloves just in case - particularly for sunrise or sunset sessions!

  • Bring a backup outfit in case you get muddy paw prints on your clothing

  • Please choose fabrics that don’t easily attract or hold onto pet hair. Avoid black if your pet has light fur (and vice versa).

If You're Stuck

If you just can't decide what to wear, take a quick photo in your outfit next to your pet to see how the colours and textures look together. Feel free to send your photographer a message with some of your clothing options - they will be happy to give you some feedback :)

Please don't feel overwhelmed - the key is to keep it simple and let your bond with your dog shine through. Have fun!
